On Travertine

No. 04

Travertine is a stone of weathered classicism — laid down by hot springs over millennia, sculpted into the Colosseum, and quietly returning to contemporary architecture as a soft, grounded alternative to marble.

Royal Stone imports full Antolini slabs in the warm classical tones — Travertino Classico Light, Titanium, Silver — and dramatic dark variations like black-fill and Petra finishes for statement walls and large-format cladding projects.

Cemento · Sandblasted

Imported Cemento slabs,
sandblasted in Tivoli.

A short installation filmed on slabs of unfilled Cemento-finish sandblasted travertine, imported from Italy and finished at the Tivoli cooperative. The sandblasted surface keeps the natural voids open while adding a finely stippled tooth to the stone — tactile, warm, and quiet under hand.

A Field Guide

Choosing travertine
in Los Angeles.

A working reference for architects, designers and fabricators specifying travertine slabs, tile and pavers across Southern California — from indoor kitchens and fireplace surrounds to pool coping and exterior cladding.

Quarried at Tivoli

Travertine is sedimentary limestone, laid down by mineral springs over thousands of years. The classic quarries lie at Tivoli, east of Rome — the same stone the Romans used for the Colosseum and the colonnade of St. Peter’s. We source directly from Antolini and the Tivoli consortium.

Cut and finished

Vein cut for long, architectural striations on walls and fireplaces; cross cut for the cloudy pattern of traditional Italian travertine. Interior work is usually honed and filled. Exterior pavers and pool coping stay unfilled — the voids are the stone’s signature, and the texture grips underfoot.

Delivered across Southern California

The yard sits at 2303 South Sepulveda. Weekly project deliveries to Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Brentwood, the Palisades, Malibu and the Hollywood Hills, with runs to Newport Beach, Montecito and Santa Barbara.

Finishes

Six surfaces
for one stone.

Slabs can be supplied in any of these finishes, or custom-treated on request through our Antolini partnership in Verona.

Honed & Filled
A soft matte surface with voids filled — clean, contemporary, suitable for high-traffic interiors.
Stratos
A finely textured Antolini finish that emphasizes the linear striations of the stone.
Brushed
A gently abraded surface that softens the travertine grain and adds tactility.
Polished
A reflective surface that deepens the warm tones of classical travertine.
Cross-Cut
Slabs cut perpendicular to the bedding plane, revealing the stone’s cloud-like character.
Vein-Cut
Slabs cut along the bedding plane, presenting linear bands of color and movement.
